Dr. Christina Kasprzak is currently leading a study to address significant racial disparities in breastfeeding rates and promoting a program that is specifically tailored and designed for non-Hispanic Black (NHB) women. This research aims to understand the decision-making process, individual level determinants and environmental barriers to breast feeding among non-Hispanic Black (NHB) women across different socioeconomic backgrounds. Dr. Kasprzak will conduct up to 100 interviews with prenatal and postpartum NHB women across Western New York to understand factors that impact a mother's decision of how they will choose to feed their infant. We will identify barriers and facilitators to breastfeeding NHB women, and use these findings to inform a systematic, community-engaged design process of a culturally tailored breastfeeding promotion program specifically for NHB women.
